MANATEE -- Deputies and two animal control officers responded to the 3700 block of 11th Street Court East after receiving a report of a 5-year-old being attacked by a pit bull about 6:53 p.m. Monday.
The boy was playing in his front yard when a brown and white pit bull ran toward him, his grandmother told investigators.
The boy attempted to get away by climbing a tree in his yard, but the dog bit his right forearm and began tugging. The dog soon let go, and ran behind a house in the 3800 block of 11th Street Court East, according to a report from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
Animal control officers were unable to capture the animal, which was charging them and the deputies attempting to bite them. The deputies shot the dog approximately five times. The dog then ran behind a house in the 3700 block of 11th Street Court East where it was cornered by deputies and animal control officers.

Animal control was able to capture the dog at this point and transport it to an animal hospital. The dog was euthanized a short time later. Deputies were unable to determine who the owner of the dog was. No tags were on the dog, according to the report.
