SARASOTA — Daren Thomas, 30, was found hiding in a hotel cabinet when deputies from the Manatee County Sheriff’s office came to arrest him on a warrant Wednesday night at the Budget Inn.
The arrest happened at around 8:20 p.m. in the 8100 block of North Tamiami Trail. Thomas had three bench warrants for possession of cocaine with intent to sell, one for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and another for tampering with a witness.
When deputies first arrived at the hotel, they knocked on the door and stated that they had a warrant for Thomas’ arrest. No one came to the door, according to the report, yet there were sounds heard coming from the room.
Eventually deputies got Rebecca Braschos, 24, a female friend of Thomas who was inside the room, to open the door.
Never miss a local story.
Once inside, deputies saw a piece of a shirt hanging out of a cabinet under the sink and something keeping it from closing all the way, the report said. When the door was opened, deputies saw Thomas crunched in a ball; he refused to get out. Deputies forced Thomas out and arrested him.
Firearms were found underneath a mattress. According to the report, neither Thomas or Braschos claimed ownership of the firearms and, since both are convicted felons, they were each charged with possession of a firearm by a felon.
Braschos is in Manatee County jail on a $5,000 bound with only the firearm charge.
Thomas is being held without bond on all of his warrant charges, in addition to possession of a firearm.
