PALMETTO -- The Palmetto Police Department today obtained a warrant for the arrest of 16 year-old Jason Charles for the murder of Beltran Perez-Diaz, 25, and the attempted murder of a 27-year-old man. The charges stemmed from a shooting that occurred on June 5 behind a church in the 500 block of 12th Street Drive West.
On the evening of June 5, Jason Charles saw both victims behind the church. Charles decided to rob the two victims with a handgun that he was carrying, according to a report from the Palmetto Police Department.
During the course of the robbery, Charles shot both victims and then fled from the area. One of the victims, the 27-year-old, was able to stagger through back yards to Oakridge Apartments on 13th Street, where he collapsed. The other victim, Beltran Perez-Diaz, was able to make it to the front of the church before collapsing and dying.
Both of the victims and Jason Charles are Palmetto residents. The 27-year-old is recovering from his wounds. Jason Charles is being held at the Manatee County Jail.
