MANATEE -- a 17-year-old baby sitter was arrested today after a two-year-old child she was responsible for wandered into the middle of a road.
A citizen noticed the child in the road heading towards the entrance of the apartment complex. Seeing no adult with the child, he called 911, according to a Manatee County Sheriff's Office report. Three deputies searched the apartment complex in the 5400 block of 26th Street West for approximately 45 minutes. One of the deputies located a person who recognized the child and directed her to the apartment where the child lives, according to the report.
The deputies located the babysitter and a Child Protective Services investigator responded. The child’s mother was notified of the incident and returned home from the school she was attending in Sarasota.
The baby sitter told investigators that she and the child went to sleep in the same bed at 9:30 a.m. and she had just woken up when the deputies knocked on the door.
