TALLAHASSEE – Gov. Charlie Crist today announced the appointment of Senator Nancy Detert (R-Venice) to the Southern Regional Education Board. Detert, a member of the Manatee County legislative delegation, has dedicated much of her legislative career to improving education and serves as chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Education Pre K-12.
"I am very grateful to Governor Crist for this important opportunity to work with other states on education issues,” said Detert. “Our goal for education in Florida is to raise standards, improve graduation rates and to prepare our students for a global economy. As we move toward national testing, it is important to be able to have this working relationship with other states. I appreciate Gov. Crist's faith in me to speak for the state of Florida at the Southern Regional meetings."
The regional board seeks to help government and education leaders in its 16 member states work together to advance education and improve social and economic life of the region. A non-profit, non-partisan organization, the SREB assists state leaders by directing attention to key education issues.
Detert will serve from Oct. 30, 2009, to June 30, 2010.
