MANATEE - An intruder was able to hot wire a motor home and steal three boat motors stored at a Manatee storage business, but the theft was thwarted when the RV was damaged when the thief crashed through a security gate, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
Sometime late Sunday or early this morning, someone cut through a fence and tried to steal a 1977 motor home parked at Jason's Mini Storage, in the 5300 block of U.S. 41, Palmetto. The thief or thieves hot wired the vehicle and then crashed it through a security gate. Part of the gate got hung up under the motor home, tearing the under-carriage, according to a sheriff's news release.
Inside the RV were three boat motors taken off of three boats stored at the business, the sheriff's office said.
A surveillance camera is pointed towards the exit gate, but it was not operational.
Combined value of the boat motors is approximately $35,000, and damage to the RV and gate appears to be several thousand dollars, according to the sheriff's office.
