MANATEE - Two bicyclists beat and robbed a 17-year-old boy as he walked in the 2400 block of Cortez Road on Tuesday evening, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
At 7:45 p.m., the victim was walking home from a friend's house when he heard someone yell his name and turned around to see two bicyclists, whom he described as teenagers, approaching, according to a news release.
One of the bicyclists grabbed the victim's rosary necklace and forcibly removed it, causing the victim to fall. The other attackers then punched the victim in the back of the head, leaving a knot, and took $20 from the victim's pocket, according to the sheriff's office.
The attackers then fled in an unknown direction, shouting the name of a local criminal street gang, the report stated.
The victim got up and ran to his grandmother's house. He refused medical treatment at the scene, but his grandmother did take him to Manatee Memorial Hospital because of the knot on his head.
One of the attackers was described as standing 6 feet tall and weighing 175 pounds, with faded dark hair. He was wearing denim shorts and a black shirt. The second suspect was described as standing 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing 165 pounds, with short dark hair. He was wearing brown shorts and no shirt.
Both bicycles were described as "BMX" bikes.
