MANATEE - A taxicab driver was robbed this morning by someone he thought needed a ride, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
When the 58-year-old driver arrived at an apartment complex at 60th Street West and 40th Avenue West about 2 a.m., he told the fare he had to get paid in advance. The fare went upstairs and acted as he was getting money from his grandmother. When he returned, he had cash in his hand and explained he needed change, according to a news release.
When the driver got his wallet out, the suspect punched him and grabbed the wallet. The victim struggled and the wallet ripped. The suspect fell backwards with about $150 and part of the wallet. He got up, got on a bike and fled north from the scene, the release states.
The cab driver was not injured.
