MANATEE - One multi-tasking Manatee man has learned when it might not be best to clear his .45-caliber handgun.
A 39-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the right ankle while clearing his gun as he was driving west on Tallevast Road near U.S. 41 on Tuesday, according to Manatee County sheriff’s deputies.
Sgt. Rob Hendrickson said the man pulled off to the side of the road and was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital. A friend later picked up the black Nissan Xterra. Blood covered the driver’s floorboard and a sandal that had been left in the SUV.
“Obviously, he didn’t clear (the gun) properly,” Hendrickson said.
“When you’re driving, that’s exactly what you should be doing – driving. Why are you handling a gun while driving?”
