MANATEE -- In an irony or ironies, Ken Quinn, second mate of the Maersk Alabama, and a pirate whose wounds he treated off the coast of Somalia, were both in New York City today.
The pirate was in town for a court hearing, while Quinn was preparing to fly with his family to Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.
"I'm wondering if he is still wearing my shoes," Quinn said of the pirate, whose hand was injured when the crew of the cargo ship fought back against the takeover.
Quinn not only stopped the bleeding and bandaged the pirates hand, but gave him a pair of shoes to wear.
Quinn was in New York to do a round of national media interviews after returning to the United States last Thursday. His final interview was the Colbert Report. That segment is scheduled to be replayed several times today, he said.
Quinn, his wife Zoya, and children Justin and Jason, are due to arrive back in Manatee County aboard a JetBlue flight at 3:31 p.m.
Lakewood Ranch has prepared a welcome home party for the family at 5:30 p.m. The party will be held at Lakewood Ranch Main Street and the public is invited.
