BRADENTON — The last run of the night came courtesy of Craig Carnes, who zipped down the far sideline so quickly he even wowed his teammates.
Looked like fun.
Was it?
“Yes sir,” said Carnes, Manatee’s junior running back.
If the Hurricanes’ 56-0 pasting of Largo during Friday night’s spring game is any indication, Manatee’s offense should offer up tons of fun this fall.
“We’ve got great speed on our football team on offense,” said Manatee coach Joe Kinnan. “We tried to utilize the talented players that we’ve got.”
The Hurricanes spent the spring going no-huddle and spreading out the offense. Friday, those tweaks worked.
Quarterback Brion Carnes threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns — both to Quenton Bundrage — and running back Mike Blakely sprinted for three touchdowns.
Carnes has committed to USF, while Blakely and wide receiver Ace Sanders (88 receiving yards) have garnered numerous Division I offers. And Bundrage, No. 3 on the depth chart last year behind Sanders and Eric Williams, will figure into this year’s scheme.
“We’ve got four D-I guys on offense who are tough to defend,” Kinnan said. “With our defense going against our offense in the spring, and seeing the speed ... it helps them play better.”
As if Manatee didn’t have enough weapons, Craig Carnes, Brion’s cousin, put on a show Friday. He ran for three second-half touchdowns and finished with 154 yards on 11 carries. Not bad for a guy who spent last year with the junior varsity team.
“He’s the second-fastest kid on the team, behind Ace,” Kinnan said. “He’s just undersized. But he’s fast as heck.”
Kinnan considered Friday’s game Manatee’s 19th session of the spring. And he said he was happy with the season, while acknowledging the Hurricanes still have some question marks as they head into the summer and fall. “We got better every day, and we accomplished what I think we wanted to accomplish,” Kinnan said. “We were able to get everybody in and get some film on them and help us go back and decide because we’ve still got some question marks.”
