My neighbor believes the universe is filled with all kinds of spiritual energy (both negative and positive), and our goal (if I understand her) should be to align ourselves with the positive flows of energy and avoid the negative flows. Is this just another way of talking about God, or is it something different? -- Mrs. C.L.
I don’t doubt your neighbor’s sincerity -- but no, this is not another way of talking about God.
In fact, people who hold views like this usually reject the Bible’s view that God is personal, and that He loves us and cares for us and is actively involved in the affairs of this world. Instead, the mystical spiritual energies they believe in don’t care about us or get involved in our problems and concerns.
Let your neighbor know you appreciate her desire to find spiritual truth; many people today have no interest in this, and may even deny that we have a soul or spirit. But also urge her to be open to a different way of looking at life -- the way of Jesus Christ. If she doesn’t own a Bible, offer to give her one.
Why is Christ important? One reason is because He was God in human flesh -- and through Him we learn what God is really like. The Bible says, “He is the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15). This may be hard for your neighbor to accept at first, but pray for her and ask God to make you a living example of Christ’s love and concern.
