SARASOTA — Members of the Islamic Society of Sarasota and Bradenton, 4350 N. Lockwood Ridge Road, begin their month-long observance of Ramadan at dusk today.
Ramadan is a month of fasting, sharing and good deeds, said Samir Khatib, spokesman for the society.
Muslims fast during the day, but break the fast at sunset with shared food. Afterward, there are daily prayers and study of The Holy Quran and a message from the iman.
Myakka fire department blood drive slated

MYAKKA CITY — The Myakka City Fire Department and Florida Blood Services are combining for a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Station 2, State Road 70 and Verna Bethany Road.
All blood donors will be entered in a raffle for a $20 Sweetbay gift card. Dakin Dairy has donated coupons for a free half-gallon of milk redeemable at its plant.
Donors will also receive a pair of FBS flip-flops, a wellness checkup and a cholesterol screening.
Anyone who donates two times between May and August will be entered in a raffle to win a Carnival Cruise. Information: 322-6525.
