Touring the country right now is a bacon festival. It's an actual thing and it's coming to Tampa in just a few weeks
The "America Loves Bacon Bacon Festival Tour" will be at the Florida State Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 11.
What happens at a bacon festival? This is the first one ever, according to the festival's website, so no one really knows. The website promises "dozens upon dozens of variations of bacon dishes." (You get five sampling tickets with the admission price, and you can buy more. There will be a "special VIP sampling hour" before the event.) Among the promised delicacies are bacon on a stick, bacon-infused recipes and bacon confections. The festival also brings in lots of local food trucks and restaurants with their own bacon-centric recipes.
But wait, there's more: Vendors will be at the fairgrounds offering bacon sauces and "bacon clothing." (It's unclear whether that means clothing made from bacon or clothes that you put on bacon.)
Never miss a local story.
There's also entertainment, including comedians and bands, though none have been announced for the Tampa stop of the bacon festival tour yet. Cooking demonstrations are also on tap, featuring bacon recipes that you can make at home. And a children's area will feature face painters, balloon twisters and a "children's bacon-eating contests."
There's also bacon-eating contest for adult men and women ("Can you eat a pound of bacon faster than anyone we know?," asks the website) a "bacon-off" with "serious cash prizes" and full-service bars.
It sounds like it could be a whole lot of fun, especially if you have an insatiable appetite for cured pig meat, as a lot of people do. It should be one of the best-smelling festivals ever too.
