The responsibility for the continued success of the Sarasota Orchestra does not rest just with its board of directors, its musicians, its conductors, or its donors and patrons or the community. It is a shared responsibility.
The musicians and conductors are responsible for the magic. They are the artists who must create the music and bring innovative touches to the performances. They are responsible for continuously challenging their skills and ensuring that they are offering the best they can possibly bring to every performance.
The board is responsible for overseeing the operation of the orchestra. They must engage the donors, patrons and community by maintaining a vibrant, healthy and efficient not-for-profit organization. They are challenged to operate on a budget of 20 percent of revenues or risk losing support, especially that of savvy donors who expect their financial gifts to be used responsibly and in accordance with accepted standards.
The community must recognize the orchestra as a valuable part of Sarasota’s unique artistic fabric. Citizens and government must continue to show support and encouragement to the organization’s leaders while they work through the issues.
If recent letters to the editor and newspaper columns are any indication, the community support is solid and wanting more from this organization ... an orchestra performing year round!
A real attempt at positive, constructive voices coming together and fixing the immediate and long-term concerns of this special organization must happen now. Donors, patrons, committed volunteers and our inspiring youth will be quick to step up to help if the organization will do its part.

Thanks to Sweat for smooth election, and to supporters
Mr. Bob Sweat, Manatee County elections supervisor, has done it again. He and his staff conducted another election without a problem. Of course this is very typical of his office. I wish to thank all who supported me in my run for Bradenton City Council Ward 4.

House health bill approval a win for all Americans
The passage of health care reform by the House of Representatives was a victory for all Americans. It represents physical security in that no one will need to fear that they will be denied treatment in times of sickness or injury. It represents financial security in that no one will need to fear loosing everything due to medical expenses.
With this bill: No longer will Americans lose their access to health care when they lose their job or change jobs. No longer will Americans be denied medical coverage due to their past medical history. No longer will Americans be denied coverage for primary care or preventive medicine. No longer will out-of-pocket expenses be allowed to bankrupt individuals or families. No longer will women be discriminated against. No longer will insurance companies be allowed to drop coverage of individuals when they get sick or injured.
