Sixth-grader weighs in on zero grading

How does this sound: The teacher doesn’t care if you turn in work late or not at all, or maybe the teacher doesn’t care if you got it wrong.

Sounds great, right? But sometimes they should give out zeros for missing work. I know it hurts when you worked so hard but then you get a zero on it because you did the wrong page or wrong numbers. Well, some counties are rethinking zeroes.

I am a sixth grader at Braden River Middle School and I believe zeros are absurd because every kid should have a chance to do their work even if it’s late. Not everyone thinks the same way I do so I surveyed some people on this topic and this is what they said.

Some of my classmates said, “The teachers should give at least two days for regular homework assignments. But if the teacher tells the class a month before it was due, then the work should be turned in on the due date.”

They also said, “The boot camp is a great idea because the students get taken out of the (usually) most social parts of school and will probably never want to miss that again.”

I also asked people around me. My brother said, “Students should get zeros because it will teach them responsibilities and make them work harder next time.” My dad said, “Students should get two chances to bring in the work, on the due date and the next day. If they don’t have it the next day, then they should get a zero.” My mother said, “As a teacher I believe you should grade homework, class work, and tests separately so if you get a zero on home work, then it won’t effect your total grade too much.”

Finally, I interviewed one of my best friends and she said “as a student I don’t like zeros and I believe everybody should have a fair chance to do their work, because sometimes their home atmosphere is not the best.”

Like I said, I hate zeros and I do believe every student should have a fair chance to do their work, but students should have only so long. I just worry about the kids that don’t have a good home life, or any help to do their work. Then they get zeros and they are totally discouraged because their grades drop so low.

Like I said, everyone has a different opinion but that is just because we are all different.

Americans want all details on any health care measure

Democrat Alan Grayson has, once again, demonstrated at the state Democratic Party conference (article in the Nov. 1 Herald, page 14B,) that he and the majority of Democrats never let the truth get in the way of their vitriolic outbursts. One may remember that he got national attention for his graphics on the House floor, which proclaimed that the Republican position on health care reform was to “die fast.” He followed that up by apologizing to the American people who died because the Republicans are holding up health care reform. Rep. Grayson seems to forget that many traditional Democrats are not happy with this bill either.
