Let golf cart drivers ride on sidewalks

We live in the Ellenton-Bradenton area. Yes, we are seniors and no, we don’t own a golf cart. We are blessed so far to be able to drive a car. All the years we’ve lived here we have seen seniors driving golf carts safely. They have the smarts to know when to give up driving. Without their golf carts, they give up their safety and freedom to shop, bank and eat out once in awhile.

Our great politicians in Tallahassee have nothing better to do than to go after seniors on golf carts.

We go to McDonalds on Highway 301 for breakfast, about two miles away. If law enforcement wants to do something to keep us safe, pick up the nuts on the road breaking the speed limit, not using turn signals, jumping lights, and the list goes on. More than half the drivers on 301 in the morning are breaking one or all the laws. The biggest joke is all the lights are synchronized at 45 miles an hour. When you get to a red light, these nuts are right next to us.

Just think of the law enforcement we could hire if they stopped these nuts and ticketed them and not warned them. I bet if they got enough fines, they would quite breaking the laws.

Leave the golf cart drivers alone.

Former Planned Parenthood officials switches positions

Last Monday’s “People” page article in the Herald, “Planned Parenthood raises awareness, support,” told us all about the wonderful time had by “almost 200 guests and sponsors” at a “luncheon affair.” We learned that the “abstinence argument is a silly waste of time.”

I’d like to “raise awareness” of another recent happening in the world of Planned Parenthood. Abby Johnson was, until last month, the director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Bryan, Texas. She resigned, after having worked there for eight years, because she experienced a “change of heart” after “watching an ultrasound of an abortion procedure.”

Ms. Johnson claims that Planned Parenthood is “suffering” economically and consequently changing its business model from prevention to one focused on abortion. Ms. Johnson now supports the Coalition For Life.

Schools will need years to resume strong education

My background includes 20 years in public schools as a science teacher and guidance counselor/director. Then I spent another 30 years as a pastor. Currently, I am retired from both of these aspects of life.

In the schools 30 years ago the big problems were chewing gum and writing notes in class when students should have been listening. There were many good things occurring in the schools. College admissions required a score of 500 on the SATs, or better to gain acceptance at the better colleges. It was fun to be a teacher with students eager to learn.

However, the last time I did substitute teach, when I turned to the blackboard some students resorted to throwing pennies aimed at my head and they do hurt! It was no longer fun to be a teacher.
