Paula Styles has been named Employee of the Month for February by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
In December, reports of a family living in deplorable conditions, with no running water and no food in the home drew several agencies to become involved.
The mother was provided funds to pay her utilities, many Christmas gifts were given for the children and Styles coordinated a food donation from her church.
One child had special needs. While the efforts were in force and the case still open, another call came in regarding the special needs child’s seizure medication. Styles noted a pattern of low-functioning on the mother’s part and, although she loved her children and was doing her best to care for them, she was having ongoing difficulties.
Never miss a local story.
Styles learned about extended family in another city and devised a plan to get the troubled family closer to them so they would have a support system. She contacted a family member who came to pick up the family and Styles drove the U-Haul truck with the family’s belongings.
Styles could have sheltered the children, but instead took the extra time and effort beyond the call of duty to provide assistance to the family and keep them together, according to a press release from the sheriff's office.
