In less than 50 days Miami Lakes voters will elect a new mayor and council member in a special election established by the town council after former Mayor Michael Pizzi’s arrest last week on federal charges of conspiring to commit extortion.
The town council on Tuesday unanimously set Oct. 1 as election day.
As of Tuesday, three people had announced their candidacy for mayor, and one for council seat.
The mayoral candidates are: Miami Lakes dentist Dr. Dave Bennett, Councilman Nelson Hernandez and former Miami Lakes Mayor Wayne Slaton.
Francisco “Frank” Mingo is running for the seat held by Hernandez, who resigned Monday to run for mayor.
The town charter mandates an election take place within 90 days of an official leaving office if the seat becomes vacant with six months or more remaining in the term. Pizzi was elected in 2012 to a four-year term. Gov. Rick Scott suspended him last week after his arrest.
The qualifying period starts at noon Aug. 26 and goes until noon Aug. 30.
