BRADENTON -- Take a bow, Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee and Manatee Glens.
Both were winners in the 2013 Nonprofit of the Year Awards presented recently by the Tampa Bay Business Journal. The 8-year-old program recognizes organizations for fiscal responsibility as well as the good they do in their communities.
Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee was the overall winner, receiving a $2,500 check, and was the category winner in health and human services.
"To win our category was phenomenal and something to celebrate, but to win the overall award is huge because there are some big players in the Tampa Bay area," said Meals Chief Executive Officer Maribeth Phillips. "This communitywide recognition is wonderful, because we touch so many and so many support us."
Never miss a local story.
Manatee Glens was the winner in the crisis resources category.
"This is an incredible honor and we are grateful for the recognition," said Chief Operating Officer Deborah Kostroun. "There are so many excellent nonprofits in the Tampa Bay area that it is truly humbling to be singled out."
Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee provides 700-plus meals to people in their homes or in centers throughout the county. It also includes the Food Bank, Renaissance on 9th's active senior enrichment center and an adult day care center.
Manatee Glens provides counseling, therapy, interventions, medication management and psychiatric services for adults, children and families with a mental health, emotional, substance abuse or sexual assault crisis.
