MANATEE -- Demolition of the eastern side of the Sunshine Skyway fishing piers will begin later today, but the western side will remain open for anglers and sightseers.
The east side of both the north and south piers have been closed since August 2008, when state inspectors deemed them unsafe.
Misener Marine, a state contractor, will be moving barges into position this afternoon and begin work by removing light poles, a state Department of Transportation spokeswoman said.
Bait shops on both north and south piers will remain open. The contractors are expected to run Monday through Friday only,
