MANATEE -- Manatee County’s unemployment rate crept up slightly in May despite a statewide drop in the percentage of people out of work, according to the state agency that tracks unemployment.
The county’s unemployment rate hit 10.2 percent last month, a tenth of a percentage point higher than April’s rate, the Agency for Workforce Innovation said today. Meanwhile, Florida overall saw its unemployment rate drop to 10.6 percent, its lowest rate since August 2009.
Despite the month-to-month fluctuation, Manatee County’s unemployment rate is notably improved over a year ago, when 11.5 percent of the county’s residents were without jobs. Statewide, May’s unemployment rate is seven-tenths of a percentage point less than May 2010’s rate of 11.3 percent.
Statewide unemployment numbers are seasonally-adjusted, taking into account consistent seasonal factors, while county-by-county numbers are not seasonally-adjusted.
