MANATEE -- Manatee’s unemployment rate in April improved by almost a percentage point in April to 10.1 percent from 10.9 percent in March, according to state numbers released this morning.
Sarasota’s numbers also improved but at a slower rate, to 10.6 percent from 10.8 percent in March.
Manatee's unemployment number a year ago was 11.5 percent and Sarasota's was 11.7 percent.
The numbers reflect the state’s slow, gradual economic recovery.

Other positive indicators are the dropping of first time unemployment claims. Initial claims have been steadily dropping over the past four months in Manatee, according to numbers compiled by the Agency for Workforce Innovation.
The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate also improved to 10.8 percent from 11.1 percent in March. A year ago, the state's rate was 11.3 percent.
