Organization: National Alliance on Mental Illness of Manatee County (NAMI)
The mission: The self-help organization’s mission and goals are threefold: 1. Support family members who have a loved one with a severe mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder; 2. Educate the general public through outreach; and 3. Advocate for mentally ill individuals affected by no-fault biological brain disorders.
One specific need: Monetary contributions. Its Needs Fund, which supports mentally ill folks in Manatee to the tune of $20,000 a year, is supported by two benefactors and member contributions.
Why it’s important: It aids 250 clients each year, paying for emergency medications, medication co-pays, rental assistance, bus tickets, emergency food baskets, water bills, bus passes, car repair, eye examinations and various other requests.
Never miss a local story.
