Scouting Lake Wales Vanguard: The Panthers — yes, it’s Panthers vs. Panthers tonight — like to run, as they did during their 72-point outburst two weeks ago against Peniel Baptist. Brandon Bates led the way with 201 yards on seven carries and five TDs that night. Quarterback Spencer Tergilafera did a bit of everything in that game — running, passing and recording two interceptions. Vanguard has allowed 97 points this season, so the Panthers, who went 2-8 last year, have some holes to plug on defense.
Scouting Bradenton Christian: The local Panthers play their final non-district game of the year tonight but need to play a more complete game than they did last week, when they let Saint Stephen’s come within two scores in the third quarter after opening a 28-0 lead in the first quarter. BCS showed some depth when backup running back Avian Humphrey scored three times and rushed for 134 yards, but one of the Panthers’ biggest offensive weapons may be Austin Dumas. A receiver, Dumas has two touchdowns this season — but he has also booted 12 extra points and three field goals. BCS has shown some improvement defensively, allowing an average of 17.6 points in the past three games after yielding 22 in Week 1.
The score: Bradenton Christian 35, Lake Wales Vanguard 7.
