School, Day 1 — and 2,339 left to go.
In the hallowed hallways of Oneco Elementary School, Patricia Solis tried to control her tears as she watched her son, Joshua Solis, being comforted by math teacher Debbie Sparks. It was the first day of school, where tears are shed by children and parents alike in a ritual of letting go. There is little mentioned of this day in the instruction manual that comes with children, but somehow, they all live through it. Within 10 minutes the tears were gone and Joshua was coloring a masterpiece that could adorn his family’s refrigerator for months to come. And in 13 years the tears and smiles will arise again celebrating the last day of school, and no, there is no instruction manual for that one either.
