EAST MANATEE -- The managing partner of Hide-Away Storage in Sarasota has picked up 3 acres in East Manatee, likely for a new storage business.
Lakewood Ranch Xpress Storage LLC purchased the 3 acres at 10415 Portal Crossing, off of State Route 64 and Upper Manatee River Road, for $1.4 million, according to property records. The seller, Portal Crossing RT 64 LLC, provided a $225,000 mortgage for the deal, according to property records.
Xpress Storage is registered to Steve Wilson, managing partner of Hide-Away Storage, according to business filings.
The land was valued at $665,082 in 2013, according to the Manatee County Property Appraiser.

Wilson was inducted into the Self Storage Association's Hall of Fame in 2010, and developed his first Hide-Away Storage in Bradenton in 1977. The company is now headquartered in Sarasota and has more than 1 million square feet of self-storage space in Southwest Florida.
Wilson is also a former president of the Self Storage Association. Prior to starting Hide-Away Storage, Wilson worked as a foreign correspondent for The Associated Press in Japan. He received his bachelor's degree from Butler University in Indianapolis and has a master's degree from Indiana University.
The business is also known for its faith component, offering Bibles and videos about Jesus to their customers, according to Herald archives.
