AmeriCorps VISTAs recently celebrated AmeriCorps Week from May 8th through May 15th. AmeriCorps is a national service program that enables those who are passionate about the community to plan and implement change. In Bradenton, HandsOn Manatee is home of the 20/20 AmeriCorps VISTA Vision Project. Volunteers are placed at various social service and non-profit organizations throughout the County and receive a small stipend from the government for their participation in the program.
The VISTAs in Bradenton are constantly hard at work strengthening the community and raising awareness about various resources and services. Some of the most recent activities led by AmeriCorps VISTAs are tree planting at Pride Park for Arbor Day, Project TEACH and Healthy Start Block Party. Project Teach brought AmeriCorps members into 4th grade classrooms to promote civic engagement and to discuss careers. The Healthy Start Block Party promoted Florida Healthy Kid Care Insurance and the AmeriCorps programs.
With 16 VISTAs and more joining the program, great things are being accomplished in Bradenton. The VISTAs are bringing attention to different issues and addressing unmet needs. To find out more about AmeriCorps programs visit www.americorps.gov
