BRADENTON -- It seems like such a simple thing, and it wasn't unexpected.
Still, Janene Witham said, finally seeing the sign outside her building almost knocked her off her feet.
The sign reads "Manatee Performing Arts Center."
"I went outside to sign off on another piece of the construction process and I saw it," she said. "I actually caught myself taking a step back."
Witham is executive director of the Manatee Players.
The black lettering on the outside walls of Manatee Players' luxurious new home was put in place Tuesday. The center, at 502 Third Ave. W., has been open eight months without a sign.
After all those months, Witham said, seeing the sign had an impact.
"For the first time, I realized that we have a quality performing arts center right here in downtown Bradenton for the community," Witham said. "I think I've been too close to the process to realize that."
The sign cost about $1,400. Before long it will have spotlights shining on it at night, but for the moment it's only really visible in daylight.
The next step is interior signage. Within the next 30 days, Witham said, interior signage should be in place in the center lobby to direct patrons to the theaters and restrooms and to seats.
