The 2015-16 season features American classics plus some acclaimed new plays
Some of the undeniable classics of American theater are on tap for Asolo Repertory Theatre's 2015-16 season. So are some of the most highly regarded plays of the past few years.
Never miss a local story.
Asolo officials announced the season Monday in Sarasota.
It's the fourth season in Asolo's five year "American Character" project, which is meant to artistically define and celebrate all that is distinctively American.
The season starts Nov. 16 with "West Side Story," the revolutionary musical with Leonard Bernstein music, Stephen Sondheim lyrics and Jerome Robbins choreography.
It's followed, starting in January, by rotating repertory: "All the Way," the 2012 play by Robert Schenkkan (best known for "The Kentucky Cycle") about Lyndon Johnson's maneuvering to get the Civil Rights Act passed; "Living on Love," Joe DiPietro's adaptation of Garson Kanin' "Pecadillo," that gave opera star Renee Fleming her first theater role last year on Broadway; and "Ah, Wilderness," a wonderful but atypical comedy by Eugene O'Neill.
There's a new adaptation of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," "Disgraced," the 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winner about how 9/11 affected the lives of Muslim-Americans, and the previously announced world premiere of "Josephine." That show revolves around Josephine Baker's years in World War II Paris, and it's heading to Broadway after its Sarasota run.
The FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training kicks off its season with Tom Stoppard's delicious comedy "The Real Inspector Hound," and continues with "The Liar," a comedy by David Ives (the writer of "School for Scandal" and "Venus in Furs"), Shakespeare's "Macbeth," and "Nora," a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House."
