There are lots of things to like about the Vans Warped Tour when it comes to St. Petersburg every year. The lineup’s always packed with a combination of great established bands and dozens of interesting young bands hungering for attention. The crowds are always friendly and the vibe is relaxed but energized, and Vinoy Park doesn’t get overcrowded.
This year, one cool thing about the Vans Warped Tour is that Bradenton’s We the Kings are playing. We don’t get a chance to see them much since they hit the big time almost a decade ago.
They have a new-ish single (“The Story of Tonight,” from the musical “Hamilton”) and a new greatest hits album called “So Far.”
The festival gets going on Friday. The exact schedule hasn’t been posted yet, but We the Kings are slated to play on one of the main stages, along with some of the biggest names on this year’s festival: Reel Big Fish, American Authors, Good Charlotte, Less Than Jake, New Found Glory, Sum 41 and Yellowcard. The members of Yellowcard have announced that the band will break up after the Warped Tour ends later this year.
