The Bradenton Herald's series Manatee Money Squeeze, which investigated the impact of the spiraling costs of housing, taxes and insurance on county residents' pocketbooks, won first place in a regional writing competition.

The nine-part series won the top award in enterprise business reporting for small dailies from the Society of Professional Journalists' Green Eyeshade Awards.

The 58th annual awards presentation was Saturday in Atlanta. The competition, open to journalists in 11 southern states including Florida, drew 600 entries.

Herald reporters who worked on the series included Duane Marsteller, Brian Neill, Stacey Eidson, Sara Kennedy and Melissa Followell. Business editor Jennifer Rich directed the series.

IRS sending info to eligible taxpayers

WASHINGTON -

The Internal Revenue Service is sending sending a second set of information packets to 5.2 million people who may be eligible but who have not yet filed for their economic stimulus payment.

The packages will include instructions, an example Form 1040A return showing the few lines that need to be completed, and a blank Form 1040A. The packages will be mailed over a three-week period starting Thursday.

The IRS has accounted for about 75 percent of the approximately 20 million Social Security and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries identified as being potential stimulus recipients.

As of July 11, the IRS had issued 112.4 million payments totaling $91.8 billion. Payments are based on 2007 tax returns being filed this year. People must file by Oct. 15 in order to receive a payment in 2008.
