Aslan Simsek has spent quite a bit of time treating buildings for infestations of Africanized honey bees known as "killer" bees.
As the owner of Fumex Pest Control, Simsek has often found the bees, which originated in Brazil and spread to the United States, nesting in the wallboards of buildings. He uses pesticide dust to kill them.
Simsek emigrated from Turkey and lived in New York before moving to Bradenton in May 2001 to take jobs in pest control with Sears and Terminex.
He founded his own company 18 months ago and operates it from his home at 5916 48th St. E. He serves both residential and commercial clients.
Fleas, ticks, silverfish, cockroaches, ants, mice and rats are some of the insects and rodents Fumex deals with. Simsek charges $75 every quarter for treating a 2,500-square-foot space. The business generates about $25,000 or $30,000 annually, Simsek said. His wife, Jennifer, helps with the bookkeeping.
"He's really done an excellent job for me; I would recommend him highly," said DM Williams, general manager at Casa del Mar Vacation Resort, 4621 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key.
"He's as thorough as any company I've ever had, and that's very important to me because I run a resort. I've had no complaints with his service, less complaints with people finding any type of insects around. He's done an excellent job, especially with the ants around the pool."
