Name: Tom O’Brien
Title: Principal architect
Company: O’Brien Architects PA
What was your first car: 1960 Volvo PV544
What you liked most about the car: I bought the car around 1967 when I was a student at the University of California, Berkeley. It was an interesting car, the seats were high and vertical. It was like you were sitting in an upright chair. It had a 4-speed manual transmission with a 3-foot shift lever which, when you shifted through the gears, your hand moved through a lot of space. I rebuilt the engine as it was mechanically simple, a 4-cylinder carburetor on one side and a distributor on the other.
Favorite memory: Driving the car from college to my parents in Costa Mesa, Orange County, and back. I went back and forth along that coast. That was a pretty drive and I ended up doing that in only four hours.
What do you drive today: 2003 Ford Expedition.
