MANATEE — American Eagle’s off-and-on presence at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport is off again.

The American Airlines subsidiary dropped its daily round-trip flight to Miami earlier this week, blaming low passenger traffic. The last flight was Tuesday.

It’s the second time in recent years that American Eagle has pulled out of SRQ. It flew the SRQ-Miami route for seven years before discontinuing the service in early 2001, but restored it in December 2007.

Area 3rd in reverse mortgages

MANATEE — Tampa Bay was the nation’s third-largest market in what was a record year for reverse mortgages, an industry group said Thursday.

Area seniors took out 3,956 federally-insured home-equity conversion mortgages — as reverse mortgages are officially called — in 2008, the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association said. Miami was the top market, followed by Los Angeles. The Orlando area ranked seventh. A record 115,176 reverse mortgages were issued nationally last year, the trade group said.
