LAKE WALES -- Two Lake Wales police officers, along with the suspect, were injured in a shootout shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to Lake Wales Police Chief Chris Velasquez.
Velasquez said 59-year-old John Goepferich, who lives at 743 Hillside Ave. in Lake Wales, called 911 and reported shots coming from his residence, saying he needed the police.
When officers arrived, police said the suspect immediately shot at them. The officers returned fire and a gunfight ensued. Additional officers and deputies responded to the scene.

Greg Evers, chairman of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee. Employees detailed tales of corrupt officers, onerous staffing conditions, being coached to answer an employee survey, and an atmosphere in which anyone faced retaliation if they spoke up about allegations of agency corruption.
