Caroline Curran, jr., Manatee
Position: Pitcher.
To her credit: The All-Area Player of the Year was an ace in the circle for the Hurricanes, going 13-2 with a 0.86 ERA. Curran went 2-1 in the Class 5A-District 12 tournament, allowing two earned runs over 19 innings, in helping Manatee reach the regional playoffs for the first time since 2002 and got the win over Seminole in the Region 3 quarterfinals. It was Manatee’s first regional win since 1998. A slap hitter with speed, Curran was effective with the bat, as well, hitting .415 with 18 runs scored and four doubles.
Fast fact: Curran missed most of last season with a rotator cuff injury.
What’s next: Curran will be playing travel ball with the Tampa Mustangs 18U team.
Trisha Zuknick, jr., Braden River
Position: Pitcher.
To her credit: A Cardinal Mooney transfer, Zuknick helped the Pirates win the Class 4A-District 10 title for the second straight year. She went 14-4 with a 1.41 ERA and 124 strikeouts and batted .351 with three home runs, 25 RBIs and nine doubles. Zuknick nearly pitched a no-hitter during the district semifinals against Palmetto and pitched the Pirates past Sebring the next night.
Fast fact: Zuknick gets a kick out of 2-Clap! — the Pirates’ team motto.
What’s next: Zuknick will be rehabbing her knees and shoulders and playing club ball with the Jacksonville River City Rebels 18U team.
Sara Hine, jr., Palmetto
Position: Pitcher.
To her credit: Hine helped the Tigers reach the Class 4A- District 10 semifinals and come within a victory of returning to the regional playoffs. Hine went 8-5 in the pitching circle and tallied 86 strikeouts, but her contributions didn’t stop there. The junior also batted .342 and paced Palmetto with 12 extra-base hits.
Fast fact: Hine’s favorite movie is “Marley & Me.”
What’s next: Hine will spend the summer playing softball and spending time in the Florida Keys.
Tura Magley, sr., Manatee
Position: First base.
To her credit: Magley helped anchor the Hurricanes’ infield with her glove and did the same with her bat. The senior walloped four home runs and drove in 30 runs while batting a solid .395. One of Magley’s biggest performances came at the perfect time — she drove in three runs during Manatee’s 6-3 win over Seminole in the Class 5A-Region 3 quarterfinals. It was Manatee’s first regional tournament win in 11 years.
Fast fact: Magley’s hobbies include playing the cello.
What’s next: Magley is headed to Florida State University’s honors and legal scholars program on an academic scholarship. She will be plenty busy, double majoring in psychology and business and double minoring in Spanish and political philosophy.
Ali Geiger, sr., Manatee
Position: Second base.
To her credit: A four-year starter, Geiger was a spark plug in helping Manatee reach the regional playoffs for the first time in seven years. The slick-fielding Geiger was solid with the glove but was also a catalyst when occupying one of the top two spots in the Canes’ lineup. Geiger batted .384, striking out just three times, and swatted eight doubles while scoring 22 runs.
