HEALTHCARE AMERICA TODAY

Healthcare America is a multi-physician group practice with four Manatee County locations, specializing in Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Cardiology, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Podiatry, Imaging, Lab Services and Urgent Care.

The practice was established in 1994 and employs 145 people.

The main facility is a 65,000 square foot medical facility that provides patients with a complete in-house laboratory and a state-of-the-art diagnostic center, including CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, X-Ray and Bone Desitometry.

At the main Cortez Road location, patients of Healthcare America can see their primary care physician, be referred to an in-house specialist, then have lab work and/or imaging done-without ever leaving the facility.

OUR HISTORY

Several Manatee County physicians joined together in the early 1990’s to form the Bay Area Medical Group. A group of sixty physicians, including these doctors, bought the former Winn-Dixie building on Cortez Road and transformed it into Healthcare America, a “medical mall,” in 1999. Soon the group grew to twelve doctors, including the Bay Area Medical Group.

This “one-stop shopping” concept attracted more physicians and as they joined Healthcare America, the physicians formed a multi-specialty group of primary care physicians and specialists, with in-house diagnostic equipment, laboratory and pharmacy. But sometimes too much success can be a problem. The group’s growth was too quick and issues began to appear. There were money problems...expensive building overages, high equipment costs. Expenses were mounting, and by the end of 2000, after one year in the building, financial problems threatened to close Healthcare America.

In January of 2001 the doctors took control, removed the then current management and filed for Chapter 11 to allow the doctors to reorganize successfully. Hardworking and dedicated, they were determined to succeed. They cut overhead, negotiated a long-term lease, purchased only necessary equipment and “lived” within their budget.

The Healthcare America physicians also went back to their roots and rebuilt the group as primary care only-the largest primary care physicians group in Manatee County. As the practice grew in a more stable manner, they added internal medicine, cardiology, pediatrics, gynecology, and podiatry to form a well-rounded group of more than twenty physicians.

They also acquired a walk-in clinic to provide weekend care for their patients.
