U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan's strongest support is from whites, men and independents, while challenger Christine Jennings' base is blacks, women and Democrats, according to a recent independent poll.

Buchanan also leads among those who identified themselves as conservative, regular church-goers and gun owners, the SurveyUSA poll said. Jennings led among those calling themselves liberal or moderate, and pro-choice.

Among independents, Buchanan had a 43-25 edge over Jennings. Buchanan also had stronger party support: 76 percent of Republicans chose the freshman GOP lawmaker, while 62 percent of Democrats said they would vote for Jennings.

Overall, Buchanan had a 49-33 lead over Jennings in the poll. Independent candidate Jan Schneider had 9 percent, mostly from strong Hispanic support, and independent candidate Don Baldauf had 3 percent. Six percent of voters polled said they were undecided.

The telephone poll surveyed 900 adults in the congressional district last week and has a margin of error of 4.1 percent. It was conducted for television stations in Tampa and Cape Coral.

Jennings nabs nursing group

MANATEE - The American Nurses Association has endorsed Democrat Christine Jennings for the 13th Congressional District seat, her campaign said Monday.

The group, which represents 2.9 million registered nurses, praised Jennings' "ongoing support of nursing and health care issues" in its endorsement.

Jennings and independents Don Baldauf and Jan Schneider are seeking to unseat Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota, in the Nov. 4 general election.

Buchanan wins police backing

MANATEE - The Florida Police Benevolent Association has endorsed Rep. Vern Buchanan in his re-election bid, his campaign said Monday.

The group, which represents more than 36,000 law enforcement and corrections officials, cited Buchanan's introduction of anti-gang legislation and support of a federal justice grant program for backing him.

Buchanan, R-Sarasota, is seeking a second two-year term as the 13th Congressional District's representative. He is being challenged by Democrat Christine Jennings and independents Don Baldauf and Jan Schneider in the Nov. 4 general election.
