Tropical Storm Henri weakened Wednesday, a trend expected to continue over the next few days.
The National Hurricane Center predicted Henri could fizzle as early as Thursday into a remnant low pressure system that could bring heavy rains to Puerto Rico and the island of Hispaniola by the weekend.
At 5 p.m., Henri was about 1,440 miles southeast of Miami and 305 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. Winds, which reached 50 mph in the early morning hours, had dropped to 40 mph -- minimal tropical storm strength.
The storm was moving west-northwest at 15 mph but was expected to slow and begin to hook more southwest as it continued weakens.
Forecasters expected strong wind shear to shred the storm over the next two days, then other atmospheric influences to further hammer the system.
A tropical wave also formed Wednesday about 825 miles east-southeast of the Windwards, The Hurricane Center gave it a low chance of forming into a storm over the next two days.
