How-To Choose a Heating and AC System
An old, inefficient heating or air conditioning system adds more to your monthly heating and air conditioning costs. The most efficient systems on the market now can be up to 70 percent more efficient than older models. For example, air conditioners are rated on a seasonal efficiency ratio or (SEER). The higher the SEER rate, the more efficient the unit is. Older equipment installed before 1980 can have a SEER rating of seven or eight. The minimal SEER rating that is permitted to be sold now is 10. A model with a SEER rating of 12 or higher is recommended.
Purchasing a new system can cost more money up front, but a high efficiency system will make your home more comfortable and save you money by lowering your electric bills month after month. According to its Web Site, FPL estimates you can save as much as $820 a year by replacing an air-conditioner rated 10 SEER with one rated 15 SEER. The contractor should be able to recommend the system type and size tailored to your home and budget. The two major types of systems in Florida are air-conditioning and heat pumps. An air-conditioner removes heat form inside the house and transfers it outside. In winter, an electric resistance heater in the unit warms the home. A heat pump warms your home by reversing the air-conditioning mode to transfer heat from the outside to indoors. For this reason, it costs less to operate a heat pump in heating mode. Start by getting a written estimate from a few licensed contractors. Locally, Florida Power & Light customers may qualify for rebates, based on the efficiency rating and size of the unit. The estimate should include the scope of the work to be performed, the total cost and a start and finish date. Obtain a written contract and check about warranties for parts and labor. Compare costs: The lowest price may not be the best price. Evaluate the contractor's proposals to ensure you get the equipment and service that meet your requirements. Paying more now may get you better equipment, service and save money due to lower ownership costs. When replacing your heating and air-conditioning, have the contractor inspect the ductwork for leaks, incomplete connections and compatibility with your new system. If found to be compatible be sure to have the ductwork cleaned and sanitized. Dust, dirt and allergens build up in the ductwork and blow into the home when the unit is running. In some cases, ducts might need to be modified to ensure proper supply and airflow. Two proven methods to reduce the dust and allergens even more would be … 1. Have one of the new, high-tech filter systems installed, which remove tiny particles and dust mites from the air. Surprisingly they are quite affordable, are proven to reduce allergens, and the filters are washable. 2. Or you may want to consider installing ultraviolet lights in the air handler as they have been very successful in killing mold, mildew and dust mites providing a healthier environment. The National Institute of Health recommends these filtering systems for anyone with asthma or other respiratory problems. And… they are a must for people with indoor pets. Replace both indoor and outdoor coils: When replacing an air conditioning unit or heat pump, replace indoor and outdoor coils on a matching system for efficient and reliable operation. Make sure the inside coil can be reached for annual cleaning. The air filter should be easy to remove and clean when it becomes dirty. Check monthly during peak usage. With a new high-efficiency air-conditioning and heating system or heat pump you know you will be doing something for the environment by conserving energy. However, you will also be doing something for yourself…saving money and dusting less often. D & C Air & Heat, Inc.
