The county elections office is at 600 301 Blvd. (DeSoto Center).

The minimum age to vote is 18, but you may preregister at 17. If signing up early, you will receive a voter’s card in the mail after your 18th birthday. With a Florida voter registration application, first-time mail registrants must provide a copy of current and valid identification, which contains name and photograph.

Those who are older than age 65 or are an armed service or merchant marine member, their spouses and dependents are exempt from this requirement. Voter registration applications may be mailed to the Manatee County supervisor of elections office. A voter identification card will be mailed to the applicant in about two weeks after the application is processed. To vote you must be:

■ at least 18 years old

■ a U.S. citizen

■ a legal resident of Florida.

You cannot vote, if you:

■ have been adjudicated mentally incapacitated

■ have been convicted of a felony without civil rights being restored

■ are eligible to vote in another county or state.

You may obtain a voter registration aplication at:

■ the supervisor of elections office

■ many local banks

■ driver’s license offices

■ public libraries

■ social service agencies

■ city halls

■ Manatee County Chamber of Commerce.

Registration deadlines: Voters must register 29 days before an election. New registration applications and party-change requests must be received by a voter registration agency or postmarked on or before that date to be eligible to vote in the election.
