Today marks the beginning of a long holiday weekend in celebration of our independence, our democracy and our freedoms.
Citizenship comes with certain responsibilities, too. One we greatly encourage is responsible drinking — to ensure the safety of family and friends and everyone else enjoying this Fourth of July weekend.
Please don’t drink and get behind the wheel of an automobile or a boat. Find designated drivers to take party guests home. Keep alcohol away from underage youth.
Remember, too, that the combination of high heat, humidity and alcohol can lead to dehydration and worse — especially while playing volleyball and engaging in other strenuous activities.
Practice food safety, too, especially around the grill. And Don’t leave potato salad and other edibles out in the heat very long. Nobody wants to get ill from spoiled food.
Be smart and responsible. Most of all, enjoy a safe and fun Fourth of July.
