Early in the week, Jim Beardslee from Decatur, Ala., and Geno Linn from Bradenton tore up a bunch of schoolie kings to 15 pounds, jumbo Spanish mackerel and bonito fishing with white bait and ballyhoo less than a mile off the beaches of Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island.

I took Geno Linn from Bradenton and his buddy Jim Beardslee from Decatur, Ala., to a catch of numerous schoolie kingfish to 15 pounds, jumbo Spanish mackerel and bonito, fishing with white bait in about 30 feet of water off Anna Maria Island over the weekend.

The summer rains and hurricane season are reaching their end, making for clear and cooler waters. Fishing both inshore and nearshore is productive right now, so get out there and get fishing.

Tides this week have been higher than many tide charts have indicated. High tides have been exceptionally high, and low tides have been not very low. So even on a low tide, for example, there were times when snook were still deep in mangroves and game fish in general were spread out and not congregated in potholes, swashes or other structures that typically hold fish during a traditional low tide. Whether this will continue into this weekend is largely unknown.

It was almost as though the history was palpable, those clues and cues that this would be, to me, more than a fishing trip. It was a fishing book brushed open, the stories of the beginnings of charter boat captains in southwest Florida unfolded.

King mackerel have made a relatively early appearance off the beaches (as predicted by Capt. Zach Zacharias), and there are plenty of Spanish mackerel in the same areas. Snook and redfish have started to make a slow transition from the passes and beaches to the flats - many captains, such as Capt. Rick Gross, are fishing adjacent to the passes. On Thursday, the water temperature dipped to about 79 degrees in the bay. Once the water temperature holds in the 70s, look for the fishing in general to take off.

Interbike is the biggest bike show in the country, where every manufacturer shows off their new models and accessories. But it's not only the bike makers who show up. Star riders were also at the recent industry show; not only factory team champions like Brian Lopes, but even Lance Armstrong, who held a press conference at the huge Las Vegas event to detail his racing plans for the 2009 season.
