  The county's elimination of the Manatee County Environmental Management Department is already having repercussions due to the loss of its many functions.   I applaud our county commissioners for approving red light cameras at a few intersections in Manatee County! Many people I know now treat the green light as a stop sign - look both ways before you proceed. Every day that I drive I see cars racing through red lights. When I'm driving through a yellow light, I often see several cars following right behind me running the red light!

  I have never heard of something as preposterous as the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test system! A child goes to school for 12 years only to be told that he/she cannot graduate because he/she did not pass the FCAT. The child did not fail, the system failed the child. Is this not a bit severe?

  School district posting budget, meeting details On Monday, the Bradenton Herald published a Letter to the Editor from a Mr. Steve Haeffele asking the School Board to post the 2007-2008 budget on our school district Web site. That same morning I called Mr. Haeffele to let him know that the 2007-2008 budget in its entirety had been posted on the front page of the district Web site for some time. In fact, Mr. Haeffele informed me that he actually found the budget link on our Web site prior to his letter...

  I am always amazed at those who assume that their brand of Christianity is the only acceptable form of Christianity or, indeed, morality. A recent letter made the staggering generalization that Al Gore and Barack Obama were "cut from the same cloth" because they both endorse a woman's right to choose whether to bear a child, and that people should vote against Obama on that basis.

  There has been a great wringing of hands about cutting the current school budget, first by $21.4 million and now by an additional $5.4 million. The Web site asks for ideas on how the budget can be trimmed. The thing that is missing is what the current budget actually is. That document is nowhere to be found on the Web site.
