Saltwater scene

Capt. Ryan Rolland had good action Tuesday night during a full moon. He headed 52 miles offshore at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and returned at 5 a.m. on Wednesday for seven red grouper, a 25-pound gag grouper, about a dozen nice mangrove snapper and lots of red snapper, although the red snapper season is closed. Rolland said some fish couldn't be stopped and broke off. Rolland fished over a long ledge. Dead sardines worked best for mangrove snapper, while almost all of the grouper were caught on live bait.

Something to try

Rolland would recommend doing some mangrove snapper fishing while the moons are still bright. Anglers don't have to venture far, but head out at least to the 7-mile artificial reefs. He said mangrove snapper are under a lot of pressure during the daytime but are more prone to bite at night.

Captain's tip

No. 3 circle hooks made the difference on the trip for Rolland. He had been using oversized hooks, but once he downsized to a No. 3 circle hook, the catch was much improved.
