Sheriff: Parrish man tasered 3 times after fleeing from deputies

BRADENTON -- A Parrish man was arrested on numerous charges Friday after leading deputies on a chase, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Benjamin Kukwa, 28, was charged with depriving an officer of means of protection or communication and arrested at 2:20 a.m. Friday in the 500 block of 10th Avenue East. According to a report, a deputy identified Kukwa while on patrol as having active felony warrants out of Manatee County, for out-of-state felon in possession of a firearm, dealing in stolen property and defrauding a pawn broker, and activated his emergency lights. Both the deputy and Kukwa changed lanes and, according to deputies, Kukwa didn't stop and instead accelerated on his scooter while heading eastbound on 11th Avenue East.

Kukwa left his scooter after some time and fled on foot, according to deputies. After Kukwa refused to listen to the deputy's verbal commands, he was hit by a Taser. He reportedly stood back up again and advanced towards the deputy, according to a report and was stunned again. Kukwa eventually grabbed the Taser. The deputy involved said he never lost control of the Taser. Kukwa was hit by the Taser again after he reportedly ignored another deputy's commands, the report states.

Kukwa is being held in jail on bonds totaling $11,500.
