ANNA MARIA ISLAND -- As of Sunday morning, volunteers had located 212 loggerhead sea turtle nests on Anna Maria Island during the ongoing nesting season, according to AMI Turtle Watch and Shorebird Protection.

That compares to the 298 nests found by the same date last year. The 2013 season finished with 369 nests, a record for the island.

The current nesting season ends Oct. 31.

As of Sunday, one of this year's nests had hatched.

AMI Turtle Watch also reported that so far this year, there have been 241 "false crawls," in which turtles come ashore but for a variety of possible reasons, do not lay a nest.
