— A 71-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a hit-and-run traffic crash Saturday morning, authorities said.

The crash happened at the intersection of Bee Ridge Road and Lockwood Ridge Road around 10;14 a.m., according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

William E. Wren, of Sarasota, was stopped in traffic in the outside lane of Bee Ridge on his 2007 Honda motorcycle when he was rear-ended buy a four-door Honda car, the report states.

The front of the car collided with the rear of the motorcycle and dragged it for about 250 feet as the car traveled through the intersection, investigators said.

Once the motorcycle became detached, the car fled the scene and was last seen heading west on Bee Ridge Road. The motorcycle came to rest at Murdock Avenue.

Wren, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the highway patrol at 239-938-1800 or dial *FHP (#347) on their cell phone.
