Cardinals claim catcher George Kottaras from Indians

St. Louis Post-DispatchJuly 11, 2014

— Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak moved quickly today to try to replace injured catcher Yadier Molina as best he can by claiming lefthanded-hitting catcher George Kottaras off waivers from Cleveland.

Kottaras, who had been designated for assignment on Tuesday, had three home runs (in his first three at-bats) for the Indians and four homers overall while batting .286 in 10 games this year.

The 31-year-old previously had been with Boston, Milwaukee, Oakland and Kansas City. He has a career mark of .216 with 32 homers and 100 RBIs over 305 games.

Kottaras is expected to join the Cardinals on Saturday here. Molina will be out most of the rest of the season, if not all of it, with a torn ligament in his right thumb suffered on Wednesday.

To make room for righthander Joe Kelly, who is starting tonight, lefthander Tyler Lyons, who was used three innings in relief on Thursday night, was optioned to Class AAA Memphis.

The Cardinals placed lefthander Jaime Garcia, who was having nerve surgery today, on the 60-day disabled list to clear a 40-man roster spot for Kottaras.
